The apartment becomes a kind of purgatory, where Tom and Gemma are forced to live out their lives in a never-ending loop of drudgery and despair. They become prisoners of their own making, unable to escape the comfort and security of their apartment.
The movie ends with an eerie twist: Tom and Gemma are now old and decrepit, and Boy is a grown man, still living in the apartment.
